Footpath-based hawkers and traders of a market clashed in Gulistan on Thursday , disrupting traffic through one of the busiest areas in the capital Dhaka for more than two hours .
Commuters complained of being adversely affected by the disruption. The clashes erupted on Thursday afternoon following an inspection by Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sayeed Khokon on
footpaths that were cleared for pedestrians by evicting the hawkers. bdnews24.com Correspondent Obaidur Masum, who was on the spot, said the fight between shop owners of Dhaka Trade Centre and hawkers who do business under the Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover started right after the mayor left around 3pm. One of traders of Dhaka Trade Centre Sohel Rana said the market committee members had asked the hawkers to leave the area. “But the hawkers attacked them and the traders retaliated,” he said. The two groups fought in several phases, stopping vehicular movement on the streets from Baitul Mukarram National Mosque to Gulistan, Nawabpur and Fulbaria bus stand.
Bus services from Gulistan to Gazipur and Narsinghdi were also stopped. Lack of transport left commuters heading home ahead of Iftar in much trouble. The clashes however ended around 6pm and traffic returned to normal soon after.
