The hawkers of the city’s New Market engaged in a clash with police personnel when the cops went on a hawker eviction drive in the market area on Friday afternoon. At least four policemen were injured during the clash.
During the hour-long face-off, police lobbed tear shell canisters and fired rubber bullets to suppress the outburst. Assistant Commissioner of Kotwali Zone of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Zahangir Alam said police tried to evict the hawkers to ease the traffic flow during the rush of Eid shopping said police were outnumbered by hawkers and were forced to move back.
