Sylhet Correspondent :
Despite the assurance of authorities, the foot paths in Sylhet are yet to be cleared for passerby. Both sides and footpaths of the roads particularly the main roads are occupied by the illegal hawkers in the city. Maximum footpaths are turn into hawkers market while both sides of the roads are changed into parking zones. As a result, the total areas of the roads and footpaths are hardly to be used. Besides, four feet of maximum roads in the city are being used as parking zone squeezing roads.
The decisions of SCC and Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) to make the Sylhet city traffic congestion free one and make the footpaths free from occupiers were not implemented so far. As a result, the traffic congestion is increasing day by day in the city.
SCC Mayor Ariful Haque Chawdhury said that he will make the Chittagong clean and green as well as most modern city in the country by proper planning.
He had said, “I am going to make the footpaths free from the illegal occupiers and hawkers very soon. I have already held several meetings with the leaders of hawkers and preparing a proper plan for hawkers to sell their goods. Bu, I am firmly decided that the footpaths should be freed from the illegal occupiers and hawkers at any cost to make the city beautiful.”
“I have taken decision to make the footpaths free from the illegal occupiers and hawkers and I will do it very soon. I hope that I can rehabilitee by taking step for sitting the hawkers within a particular period of the day. As a result, the hawkers will not sit full day on the footpaths for selling their goods to their customers and they can earn more money in the day. As the customers are fixed, they will come to buy in a particular period every day. So, hawkers will not be losers for my step,” he added.
Following the illegal occupations, traffic congestion has made the lives of Sylhet people miserable every day. The roads of the city are being blocked by the jam hour after hour. The traffic system of the city has already been collapsed as the vehicles can’t run on the main roads of the city due to traffic jam.
