Despite the assurance of authorities, the foot paths in Chittagong are yet to be cleared for passerby. Both sides and footpaths of the roads particularly the main roads are occupied by the illegal hawkers in the port city. Maximum footpaths are turn into hawkers market while both sides of the roads are changed into parking zones. As a result, the total areas of the roads and footpaths are hardly to be used. Besides, four feet of maximum roads in the port city are being used as parking zone squeezing roads.
The decisions of Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) and Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) to make the port city Chittagong traffic congestion free one and make the footpaths free from occupiers were not implemented so far. As a result, the traffic congestion is increasing day by day in the port city.
It may be mentioned that Bridge and Road Communications Minister Obaidul Quader held a meeting with the owners and workers leaders of auto rickshaws in the port city at Chittagong Circuit House earlier. In the meeting, he directed Mayor of Chittagong A J M Nasir Uddin to restore the system in transport sector in the port city. Among others, M A Latif MP, Shamsul Haque MP, Additional Secretary of the ministry Mohammad Faruk, the then Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chittagong Mezbah Uddin, SP of Chittagong Nur -e- Alam Mina, Deputy Director of BRTA Mohammad Shahid Ullah were present at the meeting. The committee recommended to evict all illegal hawkers from road side and footpaths. On the other hand, CCC Mayor Nasir Uddin said that he will make the Chittagong clean and green as well as most modern city in the country by proper planning.
Sources said, no body able to reach at the destination in time due to the traffic jam. The main points of the city New Market, Station Road, GEC point, WASA point, Muradpur, Bohadderhat, Sholoshahar, Chaw kbazar, Chittagong College area, Jamal Khan road, Anderkillah, Agrabad, Barik Buildings, Fakirhat, Chittagong Port gate area, Pahartoli, Alonker point, Katgor Bazar, Steel Mills Bazar, CEPZ point, Saltgolla, Kotowli point, Karnaphuli Bridge area, Kalurghat area, Oxygen point, Chittagong University area, Kajirdewari, Lalkhan Bazar and other important points of the port city are the major spots for traffic jam. Most of the areas of both sides of the roads are occupied by the illegal occupiers now.
The prime roads of the port city Katgor to Bohadder Hat, New Market to Chawkbazar to Bohadderhat, GEC point to Alonker point, Chittagong City to Chittagong University, New Market to Airport road are continuously congested by vehicles as most portions of roads became parking zones.
