Bangladesh Hawker-Sramik Trade Union Centre on Saturday staged a demonstration in the capital to press its 10-point demand, including hawkers’ rehabilitation within shortest possible time.
It staged the demonstration in front of Baitul Mukarrom Market at Purana Paltan in Dhaka also demanding formulation of a policy for hawkers.
Leaders of the organisation requested the authorities concerned not to evict any hawker without formulating the policy.
Speaking at the demonstration, they demanded identity cards for hawkers, a complete list of hawkers, budgetary allocation, a fund for rehabilitation of hawkers, steps to protect them from extortion, measures not to ask them to stop trading during VIP movement on roads and social safety.
They also demanded immediate release of hawker leader Delwar Hossain.
Addressing the rally as the chair, the organisation president Murshiqul Islam Shimul said that though the country witnessed some visible development, discrimination between rich and poor, communality, faithlessness and culture of impunity and fear had widened.
The organisation’s vice-presidents Abdus Salam and Md Babul, joint general secretaries Md Golap and Md Osman Gani, assistant general secretaries Liton Hossain and Abdul Majid, among others, spoke.
A procession was also brought out.
