AFP, Portland :
Ethiopian-born Dutch runner Sifan Hassan won the women’s 1,500m at the World Indoor Athletics Championships here Saturday.
Hassan held off a furious late challenge from two runners from the country of her birth — Dawit Seyaum and Gudaf Tsegay — to win in 4min 4.96sec.
Hassan, the bronze medallist at last year’s World Championships in Beijing, was forced to dig
deep in the final 100m as Seyaum lurked on her shoulder.
But the 23-year-old found an extra gear to kick for the line and claim a deserved gold.
Seyaum took silver while Tsegay won bronze.
