UNB, Dhaka :
The ruling Awami League and its associate bodies and organisations will observe Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s 33rd Homecoming Day today.
On this day in 1981, Hasina, who was newly elected as AL president, returned home from India after nearly six years in exile following the assassination of the country’s founding president, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and most of his family members by a group of disgruntled army officers on August 15, 1975.
However, both the daughters of Bangabandhu-Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana-survived as they were in Germany at that time.
Hasina was elected president of Bangladesh Awami League in her absence in the party’s national council held February 14-16 in 1981.
On her return home, Hasina was received at the then Kurmitola Airport in Dhaka by thousands of people defying rain, who chanted slogans expressing their support for her and the party.
Dhaka City Awami League will organise a discussion at the Engineers Institute auditorium 3:30 pm today marking Sheikh Hasina’s Homecoming Day.
AL presidium member and Deputy Leader of Parliament Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury will be the chief guest at the discussion, while AL central and city unit leaders will be present.
In a statement, AL general secretary and LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam requested all the party units, its associate bodies and likeminded organisations to celebrate the day across the country through various programmes like doa, milad mahfil, rally and discussions.
