UNB, Kurigram :
The people of Kurigram, especially those living in the former Indian enclaves, are pinning hopes on Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina to fulfill their aspirations as she visits the frontier district on Thursday.
The Prime Minster will head towards former enclave Dashairchhara on Thursday morning and inaugurate power connections to 643 families among the former enclave dwellers.
She will also distribute solar home systems under an IDCOL programme and address a public gathering there.
This will be the first visit of a head of government or a Prime Minister of Bangladesh in a former
Indian enclave like in Dashiarchhara. This will, however, be the fourth visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Kurigram after 1998, 2000 and 2010.
Earlier on July 31 midnight when the clock struck 12:00am, around 52,000 inhabitants of 162 India-Bangladesh officially became citizens of either of the two nations. It was also the moment when the tiny pockets of land-or enclaves
in each other’s territories got merged with the respective countries, bringing an end to one of the most complicated and confusing border disputes in the world.
That moment also marked the end of the statelessness of these people as the neighbouring countries exchanged the adversely possessed lands following the historic land boundary agreement between the governments of Bangladesh and India.
Talking to reporters here ahead of the PM’s visit, her Deputy Press Secretary Mamun-or-Rashid said initiatives have already been taken to ensure overall development of the people of former enclaves here in Kurigram as around Tk 33.60 crore has been allocated against 20 projects.
He said the government has a plan to bring all the people of former Dashiarchhara enclave under electricity coverage by December next. In a bid to improve the living standards of the people of the former enclaves, the government will implement the ‘One House One Farm’ project there, besides extending the activities of other projects there.
A new integrated Union Parishad complex, including a health centre, will be set up at Dashiarchhara while various social safety net programmes will be extended there along with other former enclaves.
