UNB, Dhaka :
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah as cyclone ‘Fani’ did not cause any major damage in any part of Bangladesh.
“Fani hit the country on Saturday morning. It swept through the mainland over south and south-western Jashore-Satkhira districts before turning into a depression,” a media statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said.
No major loss of lives and property has been reported so far.
The Prime Minister expressed her gratitude to Allah for his kind blessings towards the nation, the statement said.
Bangladesh undertook massive preparations to face ‘Fani’ at the directive of Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in London. Special prayers were held at mosques across the country on Friday.
On Saturday morning, Principal Secretary Nojibur Rahman held a meeting with senior PMO officials and reviewed the overall situation, the press release said.
The participants expressed satisfaction at the preparedness undertaken by various public and private organisations to face ‘Fani’.
They also praised local public representatives, government and private organisations, and CPP volunteers for bringing nearly 1.2 million people from the coastal belts to cyclone shelters.
Besides, steps taken by Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force as well as various law enforcement agencies, including police, coastguards and Ansar-VDP, were highly praised at the meeting.
The meeting emphasised further strengthening Bangladesh’s culture of coordinated work by all government organisations during disasters as it has already been recognised in the world as a role model in disaster management.
Principal Secretary Rahman expressed gratitude and thanks to all concerned on behalf of the Prime Minister. He called upon all to work together to face any disaster in the future.
The PMO coordinated the preparedness activities to face ‘Fani’ by cancelling weekly holidays at the directive of the Prime Minister.
