Prime Minister’s younger sister
Sheikh Rehana, Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury, former minister Dr Dipu Moni, MP, and family members of Sheikh Hasina joined the prayers.
Indian scholar Moulana Saad conducted the munajat, seeking continued peace, progress and welfare of the country as well as the greater unity of Muslim Ummah.
Braving the chilling winter and the 20-party’s countrywide blockade, tens of thousands of Muslim devotees from 32 districts of the country and 4,982 foreign nationals from 50 countries participated in the first phase Ijtema.
Organised by Tabligh Jamaat, the first phase of the 50th Biswa Ijtema formally started after Fazr prayers on Friday with religious sermons by Islamic scholars and prayers, ended with Akheri Munajat.
Devotees from 32 districts attended the first phase, while devotees from the other 32 districts will participate in the second phase slated for January 16-18. The Ijtema is being held in two phases from 2 012 to ease accommodation problem.
The New Delhi-based Tablig-e-Jamaat has been organising the Ijtema since 1966.
