Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Saturday said the passing away of noted folk singer Fakir Alamgir, who emerged as a ‘gano sangeet’ (the songs of the masses) singer, is the departure of a legend.
The minister this while talking to the newsmen after placing wreath on the coffin of eminent singer Fakir Alamgir on the premises of Central Shahid Minar in the capital.
He said Fakir Alamgir was not only a Gano Sangeet singer also a freedom fighter and he had played an outstanding role in inspiring the people to join the great Liberation War. He was also an artiste of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra and enriched the country’s Gano Sangeet, Hasan added.
He said the contribution of Fakir Alamgir to the Liberation War and democratic movements will remain written in golden letters. “Artistes like Fakir Alamgir are not created in one day. He has become a legend after many years of pursuit,” said Hasan, also Awami League joint general secretary.
He said the role of Fakir Alamgir to take the Gano Sangeet to the doorsteps of people and make the songs popular was unique.
The minister said the death of the legendary singer is an irreparable loss to the nation.
Hasan prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
