Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Wednesday put special emphasis on increasing the capacity of Chattogram Port, the country’s premier seaport, by keeping pace with the national economic growth.
“The overall development of Chattogram Port is crucial to move the country forward Development of the port is not only related to overall development of the country, it is also related to development of the entire region,” he said.
The minister was addressing the first meeting of the Chattogram Port advisory committee at the training institute of port with committee President and State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury in the chair.
Dr Hasan said, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sincerely wants development of the port. Construction of Patenga Container Terminal and Bay Terminal are going on in full swing as first track projects of the government, he added.
Dr Hasan said, once 50 to 100 vessels were seen in the outer anchorage of the port but the number of vessels in the port declined as the congestion of container laden vessels came down remarkably. He urged all stakeholders including port users, different workers organizations, officials and employees of the port to work in unison for the development of the port.
Khalid Mahmud said, “Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman gave us the national identity. But, Zia, Ershad and Khaleda Zia were involved in conspiracies to erase the identity. Terming the role of Chattogram port as important for vibrant economic growth of the country, the state minister said the port is now ranked as the 64th busiest among 100 container handling ports. “The present government has been striving to be among the top 50 busiest ports in the world,” he added.
Quick construction of Bay Terminal, Karnaphuli River dredging stressed: The 60-member Advisory Committee of the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) has decided to expedite the process of building the Bay Terminal as early as possible. The meeting presided over by Information Minister Hasan Mahmud Chowdhury was held on Wednesday in CPA Training Institute. Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, State Minister for Shipping, President of the committee and other local MPs were present at the meeting.
The speakers in the meeting strongly felt the demand for the early construction of Bay Terminal to expedite the operational activities of the country’s premier sea port.
The proposed ‘Bay Terminal’ will be built on an area of 871 acres of land to allow big ships, which now cannot anchor at the Chattogram Port, to berth for carrying out shipment activities.
The project areas include both public and private land.
But the project includes 68 acres of private land. The private land had been acquired earlier with the payment of Tk352 crore to the Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram against the compensation of land. The CPA had already started the construction works of the Bay Terminal on the private land.
The boundary wall surrounding the project would be constructed first.
In this land, the Cargo Delivery and the Truck terminal will be built.
CPA will finance, control and supervise the Bay Terminal to be built on the coastline behind the Chattogram Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) at a cost of two billion dollar.
The bigger ships with more length and draft to 12 metres will be able to berth at the jetties of the terminal for handling goods.
Presently a total of 19 vessels can take berth in the jetties. But in the Bay terminal more than 35 will be able to take berth at a time.
The meeting also decided to begin Capital dredging of the Karnaphuli very soon.
