Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, a senior judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, has been appointed the new Chief Justice (CJ) of the country.
The President has appointed Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, as the new Chief Justice of the Bangladesh in line with the article 95(1) of the Constitution, said a notification issued by the Law Ministry.
The appointment will come into effect after taking his oath, also read the notification issued by Law Secretary Md Golam Sarwar.
The swearing-in-ceremony will be held at 4.00 pm on Friday, President’s Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin told The New Nation.
The incumbent Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain went on retirement on Thursday as he had completed his 67 years, the age boundary of a Supreme Court judge, on that day.
Justice Hasan Foez Siddique who will be the 23rd Chief Justice of the country was one of the 10 judges who were dropped from the confirmation list of High Court judge, by the BNP-led four-party alliance government that was in power since 2001 to 2006, despite the chief justice’s positive recommendation, as they were appointed during the Awami League tenure (1996-2001).
The judges were reappointed as HC judges on March 25, 2009 in line with the Appellate Division verdict.
Justice Hasan Foez Siddique was born on September 26 in 1956 in Ramanthapur village of Khoksa upazila under Kushtia district.
Justice Hasan Foez Siddique was enrolled as an Advocate of the District Court on August 21 in 1981, in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court on September 4 in 1983 and in the Appellate Division on May 27 in 1999.
He acted as Legal Advisor to Khulna City Corporation, Kushtia Municipality, Jalalabad Gas Transmission Company and Chief Law Adviser of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Besides he also worked as Additional Attorney General for Bangladesh.
He was elevated as the judge of the High Court Division on March 25 in 2009 and as a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on March 31 in 2013.
He has been acting as the Chairman of Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission since April 30 in 2015.
He participated in the conference of South Asian Judges Regional Forum on Economic and Financial Crime held in Sri Lanka in 2011, South Asian Conference on Environmental Justice in Pakistan in 2012, International Conference on Environment held in India in 2015 and 17th International Conference of Chief Justices of the World held in Lucknow, India, in 2016.
