Harvesting of zinc fortified BRRI Dhan 62 has been started by farmers in Sherpur Urazila in the district Bogra recently.
Farners can harvest this variety 20-25 days earlier than other early rice variety. For this reason, the rice variety has caused a great impact on the farmers of Sherpur upazila. Due to short life cycle, higher yield, fine rice, less infestation by pest and capacity to remove malnutrition, farmers are interested to cultivate this variety covering more area in next season. Beside, due to early harvest and good price, they are profited.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdur Rahim has said, Department of Agricultural Extension has implemented cultivation of BRRI dhan 62 inovated by Bangladesh Rice Research Institute first time in current aman season in farmers level. He has said, Crop cutting of BRRI dhan 62 has done on 25 October from the land of Md. Shamsur Rahman, a farmer of Rajapur village in Mirjapur block in Sherpur upazila. The yield was 21 monds per bigha. He said, the life cycle of this rice is 98 days from seed to seed.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdur Rahim also said, malnutrition will be removed through the cultivation of this zinc fortified rice variety. Farmer Shamsur Rahman said, they would easily cultivate four crops in one year by this variety. As first time, many farmers have no idea about this variety. He also said, many farmers of his area have expressed interest to buy this rice seed.
Officials of Department of Agricultural Extension , Sherpur informed said, this year, the rice variety BRRI dhan 62 has been cultivated in 15 ha land experimentally through 50 farmers of different union. Besides, T-Aman rice of different varieties including BRRI dhan 49, BRRI dhan 51, BRRI dhan 52, BRRI dhan 62 have been cultivated covering 21500 hactores of land.
