Harvest of short duration Aman rice continues creating huge jobs for the farm-labourers during this ‘lean period’ of ‘Aswin’ and ‘Kartik’ months in Rangpur agriculture region.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), farmers have cultivated Aman on over 5.93 lakh hectares of land exceeding the fixed target of bringing 5.26 lakh hectares of land.
Of them, farmers have cultivated short duration BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan39, BRRI dhan49, BRRI dhan56, BRRI dhan57, BRRI dhan62, BINA dhan7 and hybrid Aman rice varieties on 46,121 hectares of land in all five districts under the region.
“At this stage of harvesting, the farmers are getting 4.5 to 5 tonnes yield rates of Aman crop in terms of paddy per hectare,” said Deputy Director of the DAE for Rangpur SM Ashraf Ali.
Deputy Director of DAE at its regional office Md Moniruzzaman said the farmers so far completed harvest of short duration Aman rice on 4,917 hectares of land in Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts under the region.
“Side by side with open market sale (OMS) of rice at Taka 30 per kg by the government, newly harvested Aman rice has already started appearing in the local markets bringing down rice price in the region,” Moniruzzaman added.
