Hartal passes off almost peacefully

The fifth day of the 120-hour nationwide hartal, enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance alongside its ongoing countrywide indefinite transport blockade, passed off almost peacefully on Thursday.
In Chandpur, miscreants torched an express train bogie at Chandpur Railway Station in the early hours.
Sources at Chandpur Railway Station said the miscreants set fire to the bogie of the ‘Meghna Express’ train at the Wash pit of the station around 2:30am after pouring petrol on it.
A number of seats of the compartment were damaged in the arson attack.
Police arrested at least 70 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat from different places, including the capital, Sunamganj and Chittagong districts.
Covered van helper, Mohammad Hossain, 48, a resident of Charmati village in Kamalnagar upazila of Laxmipur district, who suffered burn injuries in a petrol bomb attack on a truck at Lalpot in Feni district on February 15, died at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 10:00am.
Besides, a young man was killed and another injured in an explosion while they were reportedly making bombs at Hazaribagh in the capital in the afternoon.
A large number of law enforcers remained deployed in different parts of the capital to fend off any trouble.
In Jhenidah, miscreants torched the district BNP office at KP Basu road around 12pm after breaking open its lock and set it on fire pouring petrol, burning down some furniture.
While its 72-hour nationwide hartal was scheduled to end at 6.00am Wednesday, the alliance on Tuesday extended it by 48 hours till 6.00am Friday as part of its movement demanding a snap national election under a non-party administration and ‘restoration of democracy and people’s voting right’ and protesting the government’s repressive acts.
In a statement, BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed, on behalf of the alliance, announced the extended shutdown programme.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia called the indefinite blockade from January 6 as the government did not allow her party and its allies to hold protest rallies in the capital on January 5.
