Harsh punishment needed to stop such brutality

WE are shocked seeing the brutality on a 28-year-old youth in Chattogram for failing to extort money from his father. Police immediately arrested the perpetrators. But we should know what leads a growing number of people to be brutal for even any trifling matter. News media reported that Jalal drilled holes into both the legs of Amzad Hossain on Thursday night as Amzad failed to extort money from his father. We must say, the offenders should get exemplary punishment and the crime and punishment should be made publicized thus brutish could be feared of.
The victim Amzad said he was returning home on a CNG-run auto-rickshaw from a wedding ceremony at a relative’s house. A group of 20 to 30 men, led by Jalal stopped his vehicle. They dragged him out of the CNG and started beating. At one point, they tied him to an electric pole and asked to call his father over phone for money. After the phone call, his father and elder brother rushed to the spot to save him but they too were attacked. The offenders first beat him with an iron rod and at one point they drilled holes into both his legs.
Police said the criminal Jalal was accused in several cases filed with Chandgaon Police Station. If so, why the criminal lives outside the jail? The society nowadays observes such brutality in periodic gaps but no coordinated actions are yet to take. Earlier, we observed barbaric torture of at least two children by inserting an air pump into their rectums.
We think, a strong message needs to be sent against such brutalities and inhuman conducts so that no such ferocious crime of extreme brutality committed by anybody else in future. It’s the duty of police to check such crimes in the society.
