Harijan community demands equal constitutional rights’

Leaders of the Harijan community at a post-procession human chain programme here have demanded for ensuring their equal constitutional, social and human rights, dignity and opportunities.
They also submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner (DC) for realising their nine-point demand after the human chain programme arranged on Tuesday afternoon by ‘Sohay’, a rights-based organisation of the Harijan community.
Earlier, hundreds of the Harijan people brought out a procession and paraded the city streets from Press Club to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office premises and formed the human chain there.
With president of ‘Sohay’ Raza Basfor in the chair, its General Secretary Sazu Basfor, Harijan community leader Suresh Basfor and students of Begum Rokeya University Sanjoy Basfor, Sujan Basfor and Silip Basfor addressed the programme.
Expressing solidarity with demands of the Harijan community, language movement veteran Mir Anisul Haque Payara, cultural personality Dr Mofizul Islam Mantu, human rights activist Advocate Kohinoor Begum, general secretary of district CPB Comrade Shahin Rahman, BSD (Marxist) leader Polash Kanti Nag, addressed among others.
In their speeches, the Harijan people demanded their rights to sit in eateries, stopping misbehave with them in hats, bazaars and shops and ensure their rights to inclusive education and admission to all mainstream educational institutions.
Besides, they demanded for ensuring equal job opportunities, proper implementation of their service quota fixed by the government and stopping attitude of showing disrespect and disparity toward them for their profession, caste or creed.
Sazu Basfor thanked the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for keeping 80 per cent service quota for Harijan people in sweeper, cleaner and ‘jharudar’ posts in government, non-government and semi-government organisations.
Raza Basfor thanked the government for keeping admission quota in educational institutions, service quota for educated Harijan and Dalit people and their access to social safety-net programmes.
“However, I regret that the government decisions are not being implemented properly while appointing employees to the posts reserved for the Harijan and Dalit people as per the fixed government quota for them,” he said.
He strongly demanded for strict implementation of the government decisions to ensure equal rights of the Harijan people to social safety and dignity, land properties and houses, health services and safe motherhood.
