‘Haribhanga mango to become famous globally’

Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Public Administration H N Ashikur Rahman, MP, has said the highly tasty local variety Haribhanga mango will soon become very famous and popular globally.
“The agriculture researchers, scientists and experts should engage more efforts to further expand and popularise cultivation of Haribhanga mango through disseminating the latest technologies among the farmers,” he said. He made the observation at inaugural ceremony of the ‘Haribhanga Mango Fair-2017’ with the theme of ‘Haribhanga is the name of world famous mango’ on the premises of Podaganj School and College under Mithapukur upazila on Friday afternoon as the chief guest.
Authority of local Khoragachh union Parishad is organising the five-day fair for displaying cultivation technology and success achieved in commercial farming of the highly fleshy, fibreless and tasty local variety Haribhanga mango.
Chairman of Rangpur unit of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society and Member of its Board of Directors Rehana Ashikur Rahman and language movement veteran Majibar Rahman Master addressed as special guests.
With Mithapukur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mamun-Ur-Rashid in the chair, Khoragachh union Chairman Asaduzzaman Asad, Zila Parishad Member Rafikul Islam, Convener of the fair organising committee Anisul Haque, and adviser Monwarul Islam Milon addressed on the occasion.
The chief guest visited different stalls after inaugurating the fair where huge Haribhanga mango and its saplings are being exhibited displaying cultivation technologies of the prospective local variety Haribhanga mango having huge export potential.
Union Chairman Asaduzzaman Asad said about 6,500 farmers have cultivated Haribhanga mango on 5,900 hectares of land in the district this year in addition to those cultivated in other areas of Rangpur division.
The mango is largely being cultivated in orchards in Podaganj, Khoragach, Ruposhi, Zarullapur, Rangatipara, Bangaon, Chaker Pather, Paikarerhat, Rukniganj, Tekani, Moyenpur, Kadamtola, Lalpukur, Shukurerhat, Tilakpara, Kashimpur and other villages in Mithapukur upazila.
The mango is also being cultivated in Badarganj, Sadar, Pirganj, Taraganj, Pirgachha, Kawnia and Gangachara upazilas of Rangpur and other areas of the region, he said.
Anisul Haque narrated as how many farmers of Mithapukur and other upazilas in the district changed fortune through commercial basis cultivation of Haribhanga mango in recent times.
The chief guest put emphasis on establishing a cold storage and bank branch at Podaganj village for enhancing storage facilities, promoting business and expanding cultivation of Haribhanga mango.
He put special importance on exploring huge export potential of Haribhanga mango to earn more foreign exchange through enhancing commercial basis cultivation.
