‘Haribhanga mango has huge export potential’

Speakers at an inaugural ceremony here on Monday said that tens of hundreds of framers have already achieved self-reliance through cultivation of highly fleshy, fibreless and tasty local variety Haribhanga mango on commercial basis in the district.
They were addressing the inaugural ceremony of the five-day long ‘Haribhanga Mango Fair- 2014’ being organised by the authority of Khoragachh union Parishad at Podaganj School and College ground under Mithapukur upazila.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Public Administration HN Ashikur Rahman MP attended the ceremony as the special guest and inaugurated the fair with Mithapukur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Harun- Ar- Rashid in the chair.
Former upazila chairman Zakir Hossain Sarker, President of Mithapukur upazila unit of Awami League (AL) Mozammel Haque Mintu, AL leader Anwar Sadat Milan and young AL leader Rashek Rahman and Khoragachh union chairman Nur Alam addressed the ceremony as the special guests.
The chief guest visited different stalls after inaugurating the fair where huge Haribhanga mango and its saplings are being exhibited and expressed his satisfaction over increasing cultivation and production of the prospective local variety Haribhanga mango having huge export potential.
The speakers said some 6,000 farmers have been cultivating Haribhanga mango on over 5,500 hectares of land in 4,000 small, medium and big orchards and homesteads in Mithapukur, Sadar, Badarganj, Pirganj and other upazilas of the district.
The mango is being cultivated successfully in Podaganj, Khoragach Purbopara, Khoragach Paschimpara, Ruposhi, Zarullapur, Rangatipara, Bangaon, Chaker Pather, Paikarerhat, Rukniganj, Siraj, Tekani, Moyenpur, Kadamtola, Lalpukur, Shukurerhat, Sikarpur, Fulchowki, Tilakpara, Kashimpur, Ucha Balua, Matherhat and other villages in Mithapukur upazila.
Besides, the farmers have been cultivating the mango in Kutubpur, Arunnesa, Nataram, Rustamabad, Nagerhat, Chowpothirhat, Kanchabari, Gopalpur, Baroghoria, Airamri, Mandalpara, Kantabari, Palichora, Ramjiban and many other villages in the district bringing their fortune, they said.
In his speech, the chief guest called upon the concerned officials for further expanding and popularising cultivation of Haribhanga mango in the area through disseminating the latest technologies among the farmers and providing them knowledge for better agronomical managements.
