BSS, Rangpur :
A significant success has been achieved in empowerment of the rural women as they attained economic self-reliance in recent years through their hard endevours in the poverty-prone rural areas of Rangpur region.
The women have changed fortune with the assistance of the government and non-government organisations utilising capacities, potentials and local resources setting up a glorious example of difference saying good-bye to their poverty permanently.
The successful women including landless and distressed, divorcees and widows, young girls, housewives and female students of dozens of villages are now confident about their future with smiling faces because of their achieved economic successes.
Talking to BSS recently, the women narrated as how they were inspired in resolving their own problems through collective efforts, initiatives, capacities, abilities, potentialities and properly utilising the resources available in their localities.
Team Leader of the SETU project Abdul Matin Shardar said these women lived in utter miseries, especially during the seasonal lean periods, due to abject poverty some ten years ago, and now living with their children in economic solvency and happiness.
Joytsna Rani, Jamuna Rani and Shanti Rani of village Gangadas Baraipara under Rangpur Sadar upazila, Anufa Begum, Tahuza Begum and Sufia Begum of village Sarkerpara under Sadar upazila of Nilphamari and many others narrated their success stories.
Firstly, they identified their own problems responsible for their decades-old abject poverty and then collectively took decisions in resolving those despite their some initial differences in opinions in the beginning.
Within a period of only few months, they brought their villages under full sanitation coverage collectively and now people including children of their households are free from diarrhoeal and other water-borne diseases.
With their own efforts, the villagers built several roads, bridges, culverts, canals and many other necessary infrastructures for their own comforts without depending on the government initiatives, they said.
