BNP standing committee member Brig. Gen. (retd) ASM Hannan Shah passed away at a hospital in Singapore on Tuesday morning. He was 77.
He breathed his last around 5.05am (Singapore time), said his personal assistant Shahjahan Siraj. He said, the veteran BNP leader died while undergoing treatment for cardiovascular diseases there.
Hannan Shah had been suffering from cardiac problem. He was shifted to Raffles Heart Centre in Singapore on September 11 from Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka where he was admitted after a heart attack on September 6 in a critical condition.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, a daughter and a host of relatives,
friends, followers and well-wishers to mourn his death.
Hannan Shah’s son Rezaul Hannan said his father’s body is scheduled to arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 6:00pm today (Wednesday).
His mortal remains will be taken to his Mohakhali DOHS residence from the Airport. Later, it will be kept at CMH mortuary. It will be there overnight on Wednesday, Rezaul said.
BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, former President Dr. AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, among others, have mourned his death.
The BNP declared four days mourning at the death of Hannan Shah. The party also opened a condolence book at its Nayapaltan party office. The first namaz-e-janaza of Hannan Shah was scheduled to be held at a mosque in Singapore after Esha prayers on Tuesday, said BNP Chairperson’s media wing member Shamsuddin Didar.
His second janaza will be held at Mohakhali DOHS mosque at about 10:00am on Thursday, while the third one at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad around 11:00am and the fourth one in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office after Zohr prayers.
Hannan Shah’s body will be taken to Gazipur on Friday where his three Janazas — one at Joydebpur Rajbari ground at 9:00am, another at Kapasia Pilot High Scholl ground around 10:00am and the last one at Gram Chala Bazar High Scholl ground after Jumaa prayers — will be held. Later he will be buried at his family graveyard in Kapasia.
Hearing the news of his demise, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir visited Hannan Shah’s residence around 9:00am and consoled members of the bereaved family.
Hannan Shah was born in Kapasia’s Ghagtia in 1939. His father Fakir Abdul Mannan was a Minister of the then Pakistan government from 1965-68. Hannan Shah was commissioned in Bangladesh Army in 1962 and retired in 1981 as a Brigadier General.
He joined the BNP in 1983 and was made joint convener of Dhaka city unit BNP. He was inducted into the Cabinet when BNP came to power in 1991. He came to spotlight in 2007 after 1/11 political changeover by taking strong position in favour of BNP Chief Begum Khaleda Zia to prevent the party’s split by a group of the party’s reformist leader.
Hanan Shah was made party standing committee member in its Fifth Council in 2009 and in its sixth council this year as well.
He had been elected Member of Parliament twice from Gazipur-4 Constituency.
