Hand washing practice to prevent diseases stressed

Speakers at a discussion here on Thursday mentioned that many water and airborne diseases could be prevented through making the people conscious about hand washing.
They viewed that concerted efforts of all government and non-government organizations concerned has become indispensable for attaining success in this regard.
Besides, time has come to transform the sanitation campaign into social movement for building a healthy society. There is no alternative to make the sanitation campaign a total success.
They were addressing the inaugural meeting of the national sanitation month and hand washing day at Shilpakala Academy auditorium. Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) organized the programme.
Main thrust of the programme was to gear up the ‘National Sanitation Campaign for all’. “Sanitation for All must for Improved Life” was the main slogan of the discussion.
Commissioner of Rajshahi division Nur-Ur-Rahman and Managing Director of Rajshahi WASA Sultan Abdul Hamid addressed the meeting as chief and special guests with Superintending Engineer of DPHE Masudar Rahman in the chair.
Additional Commissioner Aminul Islam, Deputy Commissioner Helal Mahmud Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of Rajshahi City Corporation Mahabubur Rahman and UNNICEF Field Officer Nazibullah Hameem also spoke. Executive Engineer of DPHE Md Rokonuzzaman presented a concept paper on the issue.
Nur-Ur-Rahman said the hygiene and sanitation campaign should be successful for the sake of keeping the environment free from pollution side by side with saving people from being infected with numerous air and water-borne diseases.
Terming the schoolboys and girls as the most vulnerable to worm infection, he called for making them aware about health hygiene and using sanitary latrine together with proper hand washing before taking meal.
He opined that motivation and involvement of the affluent section of the society in the campaign would help reduce dependence on government allocation and foreign aid to this effect.
Success of total hygienic sanitation programme depended on its sustainability and the NGOs, members of civil society and affluent people would have to play the key role side by side with government efforts to make the programme a success.
The field level government officials and public representatives were urged to engage community and religious leaders at the grassroots in the campaign so that it could be turned into a social movement.
Skills Competition-2017 held at RMPI
Technical and vocational students should be enriched with power of skill and innovation for making themselves a competent workforce to meet the gradually mounting demands of the modern era. This view was expressed at a function by a host of speakers who urged all the technical students to acquire knowledge of building carrier to serve the nation effectively.
Rajshahi Mohila Polytechnic Institute (RMPI) organized the ceremony titled “Skills Competition- 2017” on its premises yesterday with the main thrust of flourishing latent talents of its students together with making them innovative. Skills and Training Enhancement Project supported the event.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Alamgir Kabir, RMPI Principal Omor Faruque and Vice-principals Engineer Rejaul Karim and Shariful Islam addressed the discussion.
The speakers opined that all students of diploma engineering courses must attain competency as it is very important for their success in professional life.
In the competition, 29 innovations and projects were presented for evaluation. Of those, three projects, Interactive Physical activities using artificial intelligence, Modern House and Robotic hand, were adjudged as first, second and third respectively
