President Md. Abdul Hamid will take oath on Tuesday as head of the state for the second consecutive term as he earlier was elected President unopposed for another term.
Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will administer his oath of office at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban at 7:30pm on Tuesday, President’s press secretary Joynal Abedin told UNB on Monday.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Chief Justice, former Presidents of the
country, judges, cabinet members, lawmakers, senior politicians, foreign diplomats and other dignitaries are expected to be present at the oath-taking ceremony.
Finding no other candidate in the presidential race, Returning Officer of the presidential election and Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on February 7 last announced ruling Awami League candidate Md Abdul Hamid elected unopposed as President of Bangladesh for the second consecutive term.
During the announcement, the CEC said Abdul Hamid will be the 21st President of Bangladesh.
The present five-year tenure of Abdul Hamid expires on April 23 next as he took office on April 24, 2013.
According to article 123 of the Constitution, the Presidential election shall be held between 90 and 60 days before expiry of the five-year term. The Election Commission on January 25 announced the schedule for the presidential election fixing February 18 for balloting.
An Awami League delegation, led by Chief Whip ASM Feroz, collected the nomination paper for Abdul Hamid from the Election Commission on February 2, while another AL team, led by the party general secretary Obaidul Quader, submitted it on February 5.
According to Bangabhaban website, Md. Abdul Hamid was born on 1 January 1944 at Kamalpur in Mithamoin upazila under Kishoreganj district. His father’s name is late Hazi Md. Tayeb Uddin while mother’s late Tomiza Khatun.
Hamid passed the Matriculation from Nikhli GC High School. He obtained both IA and BA degrees from Gurudayal College of Kishoregonj and LLB degree from Central Law College under the University of Dhaka. On completion of his education, he engaged himself in the profession of law.
