Gojko Kacar scored in the last minute for Hamburger SV to draw 1-1 with Freiburg and stay one point ahead of the relegation-threatened visitors in the Bundesliga on Friday.
Kacar headed home the rebound after the outstanding Roman Buerki saved Ivica Olic’s initial header from a corner. It was the Serb’s second late goal in as many games, having scored the winner against Mainz the previous week.
“It was very difficult for us. We fought hard and were lucky to get the point in the end,” Kacar said.
Admir Mehmedi opened the scoring in the 25th with a fierce shot after running onto Karim Guede’s header from Buerki’s kick out.
Buerki had just made a brilliant save with his feet to stop Zoltan Stieber’s deflected shot for Hamburg.
Hamburg goalkeeper Rene Adler kept his side it, denying Felix Klaus from close range in the 19th, producing two saves in quick succession after the break, and then again 10 minutes later from Klaus.
“The mistake cost us in the first half and we were a little shaken by that,” Adler said of Johan Djourou allowing Mehmedi through to score. “That’s why it’s even better that we came back before the end. It’s a little victory for the morale.”
Djourou atoned for his error with a last-ditch block to keep Nils Peterson from sealing the result late on.
Only goal difference separated Freiburg from Paderborn in the relegation playoff place with the rest of the 32nd round still to be played. Hannover was a point behind Paderborn, with bottom side Stuttgart three further back. Only two games remain after the round.
