The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday arrested Hallmark Group Chairman Jesmin Islam in a case filed against her for misappropriating Tk 85.87 crore from Janata Bank.
Earlier in the morning, ACC Deputy Assistant Director Joynal Abedin filed the case with Motijheel Police Station indicting Jesmin Islam and 16 others.
They have been accused of misappropriating Tk 85.87 crore from Janata Bank’s Motijheel branch in between June 2011 and June 2015.
An ACC team in a drive arrested Jesmin from Dhaka in the afternoon, ACC Public Relations Officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told The New Nation.
On October 4, 2012, the ACC filed 11 cases with Ramna Police Station against 27 top officials of Sonali Bank and Hallmark Group, including Jesmin, on charges of misappropriating over Tk 1,568 crore.
The authorities of ACC had submitted the charge-sheet in the cases against Jesmin, Tanvir and others in October, 2013.
A Dhaka court has already started the trial of Hallmark Chairman Jesmin Islam, Managing Director Tanvir Mahmud and others in the cases in connection with Hallmark loan scam.
The court also granted conditional bail to Jesmin in all the 11 corruption cases filed by the ACC against her after she pledged to pay back Tk 2,600 crore, swindled out of Sonali Bank in monthly installments of Tk 100 crore.
However, the latest ACC case has thrown the controversial Hallmark Group Chairman behind bar again.
Tanvir Mahmud, who believed to be mastermind of the loan scam, and Tushar Ahmed, General Manager of Hallmark and a close relative of Tanvir, are now in jail.
