Staff Reporter :
Pilgrim’s pre-registration deadline expires today (Monday), but most Hajj agents still remain abstained from registering the pilgrims.
A total of 487 Hajj agencies have pre-registered only 51,337 pilgrims until Sunday evening.
Meanwhile, most Hajj agencies are boycotting the registration process demanding extension of the pre-registration time up to April 30 and removal of an information technology firm, from such registration work.
“If the government extends the registration time up to April 30 this year, there would be no problem”, HAAB Secretary General Shaikh Md. Abdullah, also panel chief of HAAB Democratic Forum in its upcoming election, said at a view exchange meeting with journalists at a city hotel on Sunday, ahead of the HAAB election.
When conducted, Religious Affairs Secretary Abdul Jalil urged the pilgrims and Hajj agents to complete the pre-registration within Monday to ensure smooth Hajj management for Bangladeshi pilgrims.
“The government has taken decision to complete registration within April 10 consulting with the stakeholders, including the HAAB leaders. The Saudi government has given us a verbal approval to complete registration by April 12,” he said.
He also added that if the registration is not completed in time,
thousands of pilgrims would fall in to uncertainty over performing Hajj this year despite pre-registering their names.
Regarding the demands of HAAB leaders, Abdul Jalil said that they wanted removal of the IT firm bringing allegations of irregularities against it. It was probed and no fault or irregularity was found in the system.
“Now, they want to ensure pilgrims quota basis on equal opportunity. But, it’s not possible now. If the scope of equal opportunity is given, the serial of registration will be broken. Other agencies and pilgrims would not allow the breaching of the system,” Jalil added.
However, HAAB Secretary General Shaikh Md. Abdullah, also panel leader of HAAB Democratic Forum in its upcoming election, told this correspondent that until the demands of the HAAB were realized, the Hajj agents would not register their pilgrims for Hajj.
“HAAB leaders have submitted the demands to the Prime Minister, the Minister and the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Religious Affairs. They have assured us of looking into the demands. We hope that the government will consider to extend the registration time up to April 30. By this time, the Hajj agents will get passports and Hajj fees in hands,” he added.
Talking to this correspondent, HAAB Coordination Council panel chief Jamal Uddin Ahmed said they will not also register their pilgrims until the demands are realized.
HAAB Democratic United Front leader Abdus Sobhan Bhuiyan Hasan also urged the government to extend the time of pre-registration until April 30.
