Kamruzzaman Bablu :
About 1,400 hajj agencies are still anxiously waiting for extra fifty thousand hajj quotas for Bangladesh pilgrims this year as requested by the Ministry of Religious Affairs to the government of Saudi Arabia.
Sources said, the government of Saudi Arabia is yet to respond in this regard.
They said already some 113,947 hajj pilgrims’ registration has been completed under private management without Hajj Guide and Muallem.
On the other hand, some 3,678 pilgrims’ registration out of a total quota of 10,000 has also been completed under government management, they added.
A number officials of the Ministry told The New Nation that there is no problem to increase hajj quota for Bangladeshi
pilgrims due to unwillingness to perform hajj this year of a good number of countries from the Middle-East.
That is why the Religious Ministry had made a request to expand hajj quota for Bangladeshi pilgrims during the recent visit of the Imams of Haram Sharif in Makkah and Masjid-e Nababee in Madina.
“We don’t get any response yet from the Saudi Arab to increase 50,000 hajj quotas for Bangladeshi pilgrims,” Abdul Jalil, Secretary of Religious Affairs Ministry told The New Nation on Sunday. “But still we are trying to increase the quota,” he said.
“Our 1,400 hajj agencies are still looking to Saudi Arabia for extension of 50,000 quotas,” Shahadat Hossain Taslim, Secretary General of HAAB told The New Nation on Sunday.
“Most of hajj agencies could not finalise their list of pilgrims yet as they don’t know the actual number of pilgrims from Bangladesh to perform hajj this year,” he added.
