A number of miscreants cut off the hair of a woman and tortured her tying with a piece of bamboo publicly at Latima village under Moheshpur upazila in Jhenidah on Friday.
The torturers had blamed that the woman had committed theft. The tortured woman was rushed to Moheshpur upazila health complex. The police had arrested one when a case was filed with the police station in this connection.
The villagers said, hearing hue and cry, they rushed in the house of Safiq Uddin in the village at about 8.00 in the morning on Friday. They witnessed that Halima Khatun, 32, wife of Abdul Mazid, serving as a maid in the house was tied with a piece of bamboo and the house owners were beating up her mercilessly.
As Halima did not confess the theft, they had cut off her hair during the time. An influential person of the village Safiq Uddin was leading the torture, they said.
Injured Halima Khatun in a bed at Moheshpur upazila health complex said, Safiq Uddin had been used to propose her to develop illicit relation with her. As she did not admit the proposal, Safiq blamed her for theft in the house and tortured on her.
Moheshpur police officer in charge Liakot Ali had admitted the fact. He said, Abdul Majid, the husband of Halima had filed a case under women and children repression act with his police station.
