The body of third engineer Md Hadisur Rahman, who was killed on March 3 in a rocket attack on a Bangladeshi vessel ‘Banglar Samriddhi’ stranded at a Ukraine port Olvia, arrived in Dhaka on Monday.
A Turkish Airlines flight carrying the body landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around around 12:30pm on Monday, Group Captain AHM Touhid-ul Ahsan, Executive Director at the airport, confirmed the matter.
Hadisur’s body was taken to his village in Betagi upazila under Barguna district for burial, said Captain Mohammed Anam Chowdhury, President of Bangladesh Merchant Marine Officers’ Association (BMMOA).
Betagi Upazila Chairman Maksudur Rahman, who is also uncle of late Hadisur, said, “the body of Md Hadisur Rahman will be buried at 10am on Tuesday.”
The body was supposed to arrive on Sunday, but the flights got canceled due to heavy snowfall in Istanbul, the capital of Turkey. The 28 surviving crew members of Banglar Samriddhi returned to Dhaka on Wednesday.
Hadisur, a third engineer of the BSC ship, was killed in a rocket attack on the vessel. The ship had since then been declared abandoned. Hadisur’s body was preserved in a bunker near Ukraine, as the procedure for bringing back the body was delayed because of the worsening situation in Ukraine.
