The hacked college girl Khadija Akhter Nargis, 23, was shifted to Square Hospital in capital Dhaka from Sylhet in critical condition early Tuesday.
Khadija, an honours second year student of Sylhet Government Mohila College, came under attack on the campus on Monday afternoon by a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Badrul Alam, also a student of Economics Department at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).
She was stabbed in the head, hands and legs by a sharp weapon.
Khadija was rushed to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital from where she was referred to Dhaka around 12.10am on Tuesday as her condition deteriorated.
The victim was first taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) from where she was shifted to Square Hospital. Now she has been kept on life support there.
“There is little hope of her life as she still remained in critical condition after doctors conducted a major operation at her head at about 3:30pm on Tuesday,” victim’s uncle Abdul Quddus told journalists in the afternoon.
Khadija is now undergoing treatment under Rezaus Sattar, Senior Advisor of Neuro Surgery Department of Square Hospital. Physicians of Square Hospital said they are trying their best to keep the ill-fated college girl alive. She has been kept for 72 hours observation. If she is found alive after 72 hours observation it would be a miracle one, they said.
When contacted Shahjalal Munshi, officer-in-charge of Shah Poran Police Station said Khadija had love affairs with Badrul Alam for a long time.
“But recently Khadija avoided Badrul. And this has made him furious. On Monday afternoon Badrul came to the college campus and tried to convince her. But Khadija did not respond to Badrul. Being failed, at one stage Badrul started stabbing her indiscriminately,” he said.
He said Badrul Alam has been sued over stabbing.
The OC said Khadija’s uncle Abdul Quddus lodged a case on Tuesday afternoon at Shah Poran Police Station in this connection.
“Badrul is the sole accused in the case. However, he is currently admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital as he was injured after being beaten by the locals,” he said.
The OC said Badrul would be presented before the court after receiving treatment.
On Monday evening, Khadija, daughter of Masuk Miah, a resident of Hausa village in Sadar upazila, was waylaid by Badrul while she was returning home from the college.
At one stage, Badrul, son of Saidur Rahman, a resident of Manirgati village in Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj district, stabbed Khadija indiscriminately, leaving her critically injured, said ADC of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Jedan Al Musa.
Hearing screams of the victim, locals rescued Khadija and caught Badrul from the spot and handed him over to police after giving him a good thrashing.
Victim’s family sources said, Badrul used to live as a lodging tutor at the family residence of Khadija in the past and at that time he proposed her, but she had rejected.
Our Sylhet Correspondent adds: Hundreds of students, teachers and local people staged a demonstration blocking Sylhet-Tamabeel Highway on Tuesday morning, demanding Badrul’s arrest and capital punishment.
Apart from the Sylhet Government Mohila College, students of different educational institutions, including MC University College, and local people also took to the highway demanding exemplary punishment to Badrul.
They also held protest rally at Chowhatta point in Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar area. They chanted slogans demanding capital punishment to Badrul.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Tuesday said the attacker, who stabbed Khadija Akhter Nargis yesterday, will be brought to justice, no matter what his political association is.
Meanwhile, the SUST authorities have expelled Badrul Alam from the University.
Zakir Hossain, General Secretary of BCL central committee, said his organisation does not support any immoral activities. Thus, Badrul Alam has been expelled from the BCL, he said.
