Striking tea workers at Chandpur area in Chunarughat of Habiganj district submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister demanding cancellation of the decision to allocate ‘arable land’ for building an economic zone.
The workers of the tea gardens in Chandpur submitted the memorandum to Sheikh Hasina through the Chunarughat Upazila executive officer after the strike and a rally on Monday. Workers from four camps took part in the strike and the demonstration under the banner of a ‘Committee to Protect Chandpur Tea Gardens Land’.
The committee’s Member Secretary Nripen Paul said they submitted the memorandum after the one-week ultimatum they had given the district administration ended. The district administration did not say anything about the ultimatum yet, Paul said. He said they will stage a strike for two hours and rallies starting Tuesday.
UNO Mashhudul Kabir said he will forward the memorandum to the deputy commissioner as he does not have the authority send anything directly to the prime minister. The deputy commissioner will take the next step, he said.
