At least eight people, including three women, were injured during a gunfight between two rival gangs at Kalagarirpara village in Moheshkhali upazila on Tuesday.
The injured are Rabiul Alam, 22, son of Yousuf Ali, Amanul Karim, 25, son of Md Jalal, Shafiul Alam, 30, son of Nur Ahmed, Jahangir Alam, 24, son of Abul Kalam, Abdul Mazid, 24, son of Zafar Alam, his younger sister SSC examinee Umme Habiba, 16, Rozina Begum, 25, wife of Jagir Hossain, and Sumi Akhtar, 25, wife of Abu Shama.
Of them, five were admitted to Moheshkhali Upazila Health Complex while the rest at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.
Locals said there had been a longstanding rivalry between two infamous gangs ‘Jalal Bahini’ and ‘Jonab Ali Bahini’ of the village over establishing supremacy in the area. Recently Jalal came out of the jail and regrouped his gang.
Around 10:00am on Tuesday, Jalal’s men equipped with firearms entered the village and chased Jonab’s cohorts towards the hills.
When Jonab’s men were returning to the village from the hill, Jalal’s cohorts attacked them again, triggering a gunfight between the two gangs. Both sides traded gunshots and that left eight villagers injured.
