UNB, Dhaka :Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor Sayeed Khokon on Sunday announced that all footpaths of Gulistan area will be freed from encroachment within 30 days to ensure smooth movement of pedestrians.However, the DSCC mayor also assured that hawkers can run their business on the footpath without obstructing walker’s movements until they are rehabilitated He came up with the remark during a eviction drive against illegal establishments of Gulistan area on Sunday morning. Sayeed Khokon said Gulistan is an important area as thousands of people are crossing the area. “We will do whatever is required to clean the area, including conducting eviction drives every day,” he added.The DSCC mayor alleged that a few corrupt police officers as well as several political leaders might have been involved in running business on the footpath after constructing illegal establishments. He called upon to the hawkers not to give any money to the extortionists.Saying that the DSCC have the capability to remove illegal billboards, banner and festoons in 72 hours, the mayor sought cooperations from the city dwellers in this regard.During the drive, around 50 illegal establishments were evicted from the footpaths in Gulistan area.Chief estate officer of DSCC Khalid Ahmed and two executive magistrates-Mamunur Rashid and Nazmus Soyeb – also accompanies the mayor during the drive.
