Holy Ramzan: Guard tongue

Abdul Muqit Chowdhury :
A Hadith of Rasulullah (Sm) narrated by Hazrat Ali (Ra) is: “Whosoever fast during the month of Ramzan out of faith and seeking Allah’s pleasure and guards his ears, eyes and tongue from harming people, Allah will accept his fasting, forgive his past sins ….. ”
In this Hadith guarding
of ‘ears, eyes and tongue from harming people’ has been quoted. It is the social significance and appeal of Holy Ramzan.
In this Hadith the words “guards his ears, eyes and tongue from harming people” come as a reflection of the Verse of the Holy Quran. The Injunction revealed on the behaviour of Muslims is to be followed as the ideal of the greatest Prophet of Islam:
“And who is better in speech than him who prayeth unto his Lord and do the right, and saith : Lo! I am of those who surrender (unto Him).” (Verse 33, Sura Fussilat/ Ha, Mim, As, Sazda 41 , The Meanings of the Glorious Qur’an by Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall)
For a comparative glance of the readers the translation of the same verse by Allama Yusuf Ali is mentioned here : “Who is better in speech than one who calls (men) to God, works righteousness, and says, ‘I am of those who bow in Islam’ ? (Verse 33, Sura Fussilat/ Ha, Mim, As-Sazda, 41, The Holy Quran Translation and Commentary)
Allama Yusuf Ali comments on the Verse : “Better in speech : i.e, speaks better counsel ; or is more worthy of being listened to. That his word reaches the highest mark of human speech is evidenced by three facts : (1) that he calls all to the Truth of God, showing that his thoughts are not centered on himself. (2) every deed of his is righteousness, showing that there is no divergence between his preaching and his conduct ; and (3) he completely associates himself with the Will of God, showing that he is the full embodiment of Islam. What a fine description of the holy Prophet!”
We should reflect in our lives the highest ideal of Muhammadur Rasulullah (Sm) as the members of the Muslim Ummah and should try to ‘guard’ our ‘tongue’ so that we don’t become harmful in our talks with others. This was the lofty ideal of the Preacher of Islam. The month of Holy Ramzan comes as the best time of this training and we should avail ourselves of this great opportunity.
While observing fasting, we should go deep into the teachings of ‘self, restraint’ of fasting and should contribute to social harmony and brotherly atmosphere.
We know, there are forbidden things which pollute the social environment. Backbiting, envy, calumny, vain discourses, lying and the like are anti-social elements and these are anti-human. These create conflict in the society. In the Hadith referred here, Rasulullah (Sm) has called the Muslims to be above these heinous inhuman instincts to be awarded of the forgiveness of Allah through acceptance of fasting.
In the Hadith-e-Qudsi the Prophet (Sm) said, ” Allah, the Exalted says, fasting is (exclusively) for Me and I will reward it.”
So, we should practice fasting to live above anti-social instincts and elements to build a society of peace and harmony.
Peace and prosperity in the society depends on the peace-loving attitude and brotherly dealings of the members of the society. Broadness of mind guarantees peace and tranquillity in the society and the nation. The fasting of a person is not accepted by Allah until and unless he/she maintains a peaceful attitude and does not harm anybody by words and conflicting activities.
