Growing of chemical-free mangoes stressed

Agricultural scientists and researchers at a workshop here yesterday unequivocally called for growing and harvesting chemical-free mangoes to ensure safe delivery of the delicious fruit to the customers.
They said emphasis should be given on development of packaging system for increasing the export of mangoes to other countries. All concerned including agricultural officials and researchers, farmers and businessmen should work together to this end.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) organized the workshop styled “Use Prevention of Harmful Chemicals on Mango and Safe and Effective Use of Pesticide” at the conference hall of Regional Fruit Research Station (RFRS).
Director (Horticulture) of DAE SM Abujar addressed the workshop as chief guest with Fazlur Rahman, Additional Director of DAE, in the chair. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Fazley Rabbi, Additional Superintendent of Police Abul Kalam Azad and Principal Scientific Officer of RFRS Dr Alim Uddin also spoke.
Chief Guest Abujar said mango is the leading seasonal cash crop of the region and dominates its economy for the delicious fruit. There is no alternative to making the growers and others concerned habituated in maintaining hygienic condition and other best practices during production and marketing of mangoes.
Modern technologies should be promoted commercially in the process to protect mango from unethical mixing of formalin and other harmful
insecticides besides facilitating the farmers to get quality and better yield and price.
During his keynote presentation, Dr Shamim Alam, Additional Deputy Director (Horticulture) of DAE, said mango, the most delicious summer fruit of Bangladesh and the other products from mangoes have a bright prospect for exporting them to other countries.
He said use of harmful chemicals must be avoided and packaging system should be developed. Dr Alam further added that mangoes should not be harvested before maturity. Time has come to forge social movement and campaign against mixing of harmful chemicals in mango.
More than 100 persons from DAE, research organizations concerned and farmers from different upazilas of the district participated in the workshop.
Candidates’ pledge for making welfare-oriented union parishad: Chairmen candidates for the upcoming election in Mougachhi Union Parishad under Mohanpur Upazila in the district have pledged to turn their respective union parishad into a welfare oriented institution besides upholding communal harmony in the region.
They also expressed their commitment to make the UP corruption-free, transparent, accountable and welfare-oriented.
The four chairmen candidates-Al Amin Bishwas (Awami League), Haresh Ali (Jatiya Party), Abul Hossain Khan (BNP) and Abul Hossain Sarder (Independent) — were speaking at a programme at Mougachhi Bazar ahead of the election on Tuesday afternoon.
Local unit of Sushasoner Jonya Nagorik (SUJON) organized the event in association with The Hunger Project Bangladesh, “Promoting Democratic Inclusion and Governance through Youth (PRODIGY).” The British Council supported the event.
The candidates also promised to put in their best efforts to improve the administration besides uplifting living and livelihood condition of their voters through need-oriented projects.
While speaking, the candidates sought votes in favour of their respective symbols. They also pledged to accept people’s verdict in the ensuing UP polls and work together with the people for an improved municipality.
Besides, they vowed to eradicate drug addiction, child marriage, ensure child education, and reduce dropout in primary education in the region.
Hundreds of enthusiastic people including women and youths joined the programme and raised volley of questions relating to their existing suffering and its development to the chairmen aspirants in the local government elections.
With PRODIGY Mentor Korban Ali in the chair, SOJON district unit General Secretary Asad Ali, Area Coordinator Subrata Kumar Paul and Coordinator Asir Uddin spoke on the occasion.
