UNB, Satkhira :
Farmers are pretty hopeful about production of mustard beyond their expectation in the district this season.
Sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Satkhira said the oil seed was cultivated on 1,315 hectares more land this year than the previous year.
The DAE set a target to produce 8,955 tonnes of mustard this year.
The farmers opted for cultivating mustard as its production takes only 80 days and the crop is more profitable than others.
The DAE sources said this year a total of 8,904 hectares of land were brought under mustard cultivation while it was 7,490 hectares in the previous year. Of the total, 3,350 hectares of land were brought under the crop’s farming in Sadar upazila, 2,850 hectares in Kalaroa, 390 hectares in Tala, 1,265 hectares in Debhata, 305 hectares in Kaliganj, 200 hectares in Ashashuni and 45 hectares in Shyamnagar upazila of the district.
Mafizul Islam, a farmer in Sadar upazila, said last year he had cultivated mustard on three bighas of land but this year, he cultivated the same on five bighas.
In the previous year, he spent Tk4,500 as production cost while he spent Tk8,000 this year, he said. He also expected a profit of Tk25,000 from the mustard production this season.
Besides, Abdur Rahim, a mustard grower, said this year he cultivated mustard on six bighas of land. The land was taken on lease; that’s why, he had to count Tk3,000 more expenditure for each bigha of land.
Kazi Abdul Mannan, deputy director of DAE, said the farmers are getting involved in the mustard cultivation as they gained more profit spending a little amount of money.
If the weather condition remains favourable, the mustard output will exceed the target, he hoped.
