Jamaat-e-Islami activists have attacked police with grenades in Rajshahi during their strike on Thursday.
Police raided different parts of the city and detained 27 people, including Jamaat-Shibir activists, from Wednesday night to Thursday morning. They were planning sabotage during the strike, said police.
Khandaker Nur Hossain of Boalia Model Police Station said Jamaat-Shibir activists took out a pro-strike procession in the city’s Razarhata area on Thursday morning.
“They threw two hand grenades at policemen in front of Loknath School at the end of the procession. The police, then, dispersed them.”
Eyewitnesses said, party activists initiated a pro-strike procession from the city’s Sonadighi area. They raised slogans against the International Crimes Tribunal.
At the end of the demonstrations, they threw two grenades at the policemen in front of Loknath School .
Although the grenades loudly exploded no one was injured.
Passenger vehicles and trains are operating in Rajshahi but no Dhaka-bound bus has left the city. Most of the business establishments in the city are also open.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Sadar) Tanvir Haider Chowdhury said police and detectives nabbed 27 people from around the city from Wednesday night to Thursday morning.
“Police are active to prevent any damage during the strike. Police, along with RAB and BGB, are patrolling the city.”
