Green Line gives another cheque of Tk 5 lakh to Russel

Green Line Paribahan on Monday gave another cheque of Tk five lakh to Russel Sarkar who lost his left leg after a bus of the said paribahan hit him in the city’s Dolairpar area on April 28 last year.
Green Line’s lawyer Advocate Palash Chandra Ray handed over the cheque to Russel Sarkar in a courtroom of the High Court while hearing a writ petition on this issue.
The transport company on April 10 gave a cheque of Tk five lakh to Russel Sarkar. Md Alauddin, the owner of Green Line Paribahan, handed over the cheque inside the courtroom of the High Court.
The High Court Bench of Justice F R M Nazmul Ahasan and Justice K M Kamrul Kader directed Green Line Paribahan to give the rest of Tk 40 lakh to Russel Sarkar in installment as per its earlier directive.
Green Line Paribahan has been asked to give Tk five lakh as the next installment by August 5 to Russel.
The High Court Bench fixed October 17 for passing further order on this issue.
The court said, “The previous order to pay Russel in monthly installment will continue. You will carry on the order.”
On June 25 the HC ordered Green Line Paribahan authorities to pay the compensation money by monthly installment.
On April 4, the HC ordered Green Line Paribahan to pay Tk 50 lakh to Russel by April 10, saying that it would pass an order for confiscation of buses if the transport company did not pay the money within the given time.
The HC also asked the company not to sell tickets for April 11 if it failed to pay the money.
To comply with the HC order, Green Line Paribahan on April 10 gave a cheque of Tk five lakh to Russel Sarkar.
During yesterday’s hearing, Green Line’s lawyer Advocate Palash Chandra Ray said, “On June 25, HC ordered to give the rest compensation money of Tk 45 lakh by monthly installment. We filed with the court of the Chamber Judge praying to reduce the money. The Chamber Judge did not pass any stay order on the HC order, but sent the case to the full Bench of the Appellate Division for hearing on October 13.”
The court said, “Supreme Court did not stay our order. So, you comply with our order. The order to pay Russel by monthly installment will continue.”
Earlier on May 14 last year, the High Court issued a rule asking as to why private car driver Russel, 23, should not get Tk one crore as compensation. Green Line was asked to respond to the rule within four weeks.
Russel, 26, a car driver of a power company, lost his leg below the knee after he was knocked down by the bus near the Mayor Hanif Flyover in the capital’s Dholaipar on April 28 last year.
The bus driver had an altercation with him and ran over Russel as he chased down the bus.
Russel was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with a severed leg, and transferred to Square Hospitals and later to Apollo Hospitals. After being informed, police impounded the bus and detained the driver from near the National Press Club. However, the driver is now on bail in the case filed over the incident.
