UNB, Dhaka :
Green activists at a discussion here on Friday stressed the need for environment-friendly agriculture to ensure food security in the country.
It is time to think of ensuring standard of food apart from boosting its production, they told the discussion organised by Poribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA), an environmental voluntary organisation, marking the World Food Day.
They said indiscriminate use of chemical fertilisers
and pesticide in agriculture, use of underground water and introduction genetically modified (GM) crops contribute to rapid deterioration of soil and water quality.
Chaired by Poba executive general secretary Engr Abdus Sobhan, the discussion was addressed, among others, by Poba joint secretary Linen Chowdhury, nutritionist Shamsunnar Nahid, Green Mind Society president Amir Hossain and Anandapat president Syed Aminul Haque Kawsar.
A five-point demand was put forward at the discussion. The demands include effective implementation of the Safe Food Act 2013, taking steps of banning chemical fertilisers, which pose a threat to human health, and setting up Zila Agriculture Court.
