Sakhina is one the heroines of Eastern Bengal Ballads of Mymensing .(Mymensingh Gitikas). Chandra Kumar De and Dr. Dinesh Chandra Sen were the collectors of these folk ballads and the editor was Dr.Dinesh Chandra Sen. The collection of (Mymensingh Geetika) folk ballads was published from Calcutta University, India in 1923.
.The historical events as high cultural level reached by the people of greater Mymensingh region are manifest in their folk-lore and ballads. Ballad is a simple narrative poem, often of popular origin, composed in short stanzas, especially one of romantic character and adapted for singing. Basically, love and romance is the theme of these folk ballads.
The ballad of love story of Sakhina, the daughter of Omar Kha, with Dewan Feroj Kha, the grand son of Isha Khan, is based on a true story which took place at the end of the 17th century during the rein of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. This event had been sung and performed on stages in villages of this region since the end of story in tragedy.
Sakhina Bibi was the great warrior lady according to the fable. People from distant places take a journey of pilgrimage to the grave of Sakhina Bibi in the village of Kumri in Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh district.
The village Kumri is situated on the eastern bank of the historic river Suria, which becomes a small cannel at present and only one kilo away from the village of Kella Tajpur, Sakhina Bibi’s father’s house. Both historic villages are in Maoha union of Gouripur upazila. Chairman of Maoha Union Parishad and an elector of the Electoral Committee for Birongana Sakhina(B.S.) Silver Pen Award , Md. Ramij Uddin Swapon said to the New Nation, once the historic river Suria was big and the water of Suria went red with the bloods of solders from both sides during the battle of Sakhina against her father Omar Kha of Mugal ancestry in the fort of Tajpur to free her husband Dewan (Lord) Feroj Kha of Jangalbari of Kishorganj district. He also said, the long, big muddy wall of the decaying fort of Lord Omar Kha had been getting level to the earth for hundred years in the village of Killa Tajpur where Persian beautiful Sakhina grew up and taught the art of archery, sword fighting and horse riding until her adulthood.
. To describe the tragic tale of the warrior lady, the bride of Jangalbari, Sakhina Bibi,
another elector of the Electoral Committee for Birongana Sakhina(B.S.) Silver Pen Award , Muslem Uddin Mohammad said to the New Nation, gazing at the portrait of Sakhina, the warrior princess of Kella Tajpur, Feroj Kha fell in love with her and offer his love to the princes in person. Feroj Kha arrived at Kella Tajpur, dressed as a fakir when Omar Kha was ill.
After a few days, Feroj Kha left Kella (fort) Tajpur and took Sakhina eloped with him to Janglebari.for marriage. Omar Kha went to the Mugal governor at Dhaka for complain of the abduction of Sakhina. Then a battle took place between the lord of Kella Tajpur and the lord of Jangalbari. At last Feroj Kha was captured by Omar Kha’s army and send out to Kella Tajpur. On hearing the news, Sakhina appeared to be a soldier to join the battle to lead the fighting against her father’s army. Sakhina also disguised herself and hide her true identity as a woman. She was proud of her courage and very expert in fighting the enemy on the horse back. She was planning to cross the Suria river and take over her father’s fort; For her courage in the battle field she won the title “Birongana(warrior)” before her name by the people; then a messenger with a white flag came to Sakhina.
At this time, she thought that it might be a message of surrender from her father. But the most pathetic scene appears when she receives divorce letter from her husband in the field. She thought that the earth has turned upside down. She also felt that a very poisonous snake had bitten her in the head. She collapsed from the horse’s back. She can not bear this shocking news and thus dies out of shock.
These areas as well as the grave of Sakhina in Gouripur are glorified with the true love story. Many people of this upazila want these historical places as tourism places, as tourists come here everyday. Some clubs and co-operatives are formed with the name of Sakhina. Art and cultural activities of Sakhina’ story found there; for example,Creative Association in Gouripur upazila organize an award giving program named “The Electoral Committee for Birongana Sakhina(B.S.) Silver Pen Award” having 151 electoral members or electors.
