Abduction has been taking place in the city and elsewhere in the country almost every day to the grave concern of the people in general and human rights bodies in particular.
The government has so far failed in most cases to unveil the mystery behind increasing incidents of abductions. Immediate after return of husband of BELA Executive Director Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Narayanganj City Corporation councillor Nazrul Islam with four others were abducted on Sunday. The abduction of a lawyer with his driver took place simultaneously with the incident of abduction of Nazrul Islam. A total of 196 incidents of abduction took place in last three months this year, reports said.
Meanwhile, the whereabouts of industrialist Saiful Islam Hiru, a former MP of BNP, president of Laksham Poura BNP Humayun Kabir Parvez and Comilla city Jubo League leader Rakibul Hasan Shaon, remains unknown. Shaon remains traceless for a month while the two local level BNP leaders were abducted five months ago.
The members of victims families claim that they were abducted by persons introducing themselves as members of RAB and police. But RAB and police claim that they have no connections with those incidents. Hiru and Parvez were abducted by a group of people introducing themselves as members of RAB at Alishar area, Commila Sadar on November 27 last year when they were on way to Dhaka by an ambulance, Hiru’s son Rafsan said. Officer in Charge of Laksham Monwar Hossain Chowdhury said that they were investigating the abduction of Hiru and Parvez.

She said that she has been passing her time in great agonies for safe return of her husband.

Of those abducted the bodies of 43 were recovered, according to Ain O Shalish Kendra (ASK). Out of the total abducted persons 24 returned to their families, ASK said. Of the abducted people 14 were handed were over to law enforcing agencies, it said adding a total of 187 remain traceless. A total of 16 persons were killed while six others were abducted since October, 26 last, the source said. Meanwhile, BNP at a press briefing on Tuesday released a list of those who were killed or abducted in Luxmipur during the last six months.
