UNB, Dhaka :
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon on Thursday said the country’s GDP growth rate will mark a rise by 2.5 percent if corruption could be curbed effectively.
“The GDP growth posts 2.5 percent less due to widespread corruption. If corruption can be curbed, the GDP growth will rise by over 2.5 percent,” he said participating in the general discussion on the 2015-’16 proposed national budget.
The Workers Party chief also expressed dissatisfaction over the government’s failure to ensure good governance and effective steps against recent the incidents of sexual harassment of women.
“We couldn’t take proper steps against the sensitive issue…the country where the women cannot feel safe to move at night and the sexual assault continues cannot be called a civilized one,” Menon told the House.
Noting that good governance is essential to continue the GDP growth, the minister said tender manipulation, violence, killing and forced disappearance tarnish the government’s achievements.
Opposing the privatisation of power sector, he said everything in the power sector is gradually going to the private sector. “We’ll have to
think how it’ll be convenient for an independent country to privatise the power sector,” he said.
“To face the power crisis, the steps taken by the government for rental power plant and quick rental power plant enacting a special law in the past went against our national interest,” the minister bemoaned.
He said, the special law is not needed any more as there has been a significant progress in the power sector. About the budgetary allocation for the education sector, the minister said the allocation for the sector is gradually falling in terms of the total budget size.
The leftist leader demanded that Jamaat-e Islami be banned by passing a bill in the House. “Jamaat is charged with terrorism and militancy … I place our party’s demand for banning Jamaat.” Criticising BNP, Menon said the party now wants a political compromise losing on all fronts.
