ACC investigating: Graft charge against NBR Chairman

Staff Reporter :The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating again a graft allegation brought against National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Golam Hossain.In August, ACC Deputy Director and Investigation Officer Mohammad Nasir Uddin submitted a search report to the Commission, recommending for disposing of the complaint against the NBR Chairman.Any credible evidence could not be gathered in support of the complaint, said the report. As such, the complaint against Golam Hossain should be quashed. After a long scrutiny, the Commission top officials directed Nasir Uddin to investigate it again. ACC Chairman M Badiuzzaman admitted it to the media. A letter signed by ACC Commissioner Dr Nasir Uddin Ahmed about holding of inquiry against the NBR Chairman was sent to the Chief Secretary of the Prime Minister office on December 17 last year for information.It says, the several corruption allegations have been brought against him is now under investigation.The complaint received by the ACC states, Golam Hossain provided depreciation facility on the recondition cars imported from abroad. He directed the customs intelligence to abstain from taking action against authorities of some apparel factories on charge of selling products in the open markets imported under tax benefit.Revenue of Tk 3,100 crore receivable from several SIM card operators could not be realised due to his questionable role.Besides, some more steps taken by him when he was commerce secretary are also under scrutiny. Sources said, an ordinance issued during the current fiscal year gave 45 percent depreciation facility on imported recondition cars. As per ordinance, the owners of 3,500 cars enjoyed the facility. A letter of NBR sent to the Finance Minister said that the government had been deprived of revenue for Tk 24.89 crore due to the above reason.Meanwhile, NBR Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) has sent letters to banks asking for information about his and his wife Zakia Mansur’s bank accounts.
