A section of unscrupulous people have been occupying the both sides of Chitra River in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah constructing houses, nurseries, other business establishments and religious institutions illegally. But the authority virtually keeping their eyes closed to see the matters, alleged local people.
Locals said, the River Chitra was originated from Chuadanga which covers at least 45 kilometers in Jhenaidah. At least 12 kilometers of the river bed between Nimtala and Faila in Kaliganj was alleged occupied by the local grabbers. The grabbers had constructed pucca buildings on the river bank and bed. They had constructed the dining room of a Hindu religion institute near the bridge at Kaliganj Bazer Road, nursery or ponds at villages Ganna Bazer, Faila, Helai, Salikha, Farashpur, Shatbaria, Mostabapur and Chaprail.
Locals alleged that a man of Jessore had constructed pucca houses at Nimtala point on Jessore-Jhenaidah road in 2009. The local administration had stopped the construction work, while owner once again had started construction of the same very recently ignoring the administrative order. As per the local administration, the land was the river land in 1926, while some one had been demanding the land for his own.
Jamir Uddin of Helai village said, the River Chitra was almost a mighty river which was one of the most important means of communications from and to Kaliganj and Jhenaidah district. But the same had turned to a dead canals due to occupation of river bank and beds.
Jamir Uddin said, the farmers, especially; the fishermen in Kaliganj and surrounding areas were leading their lives through fishing from the river.
Further, the river water was used as irrigation water for the farmers. It was increasing the land fertility on both sides of the river due to heavy siltation every year. Now the fishermen became jobless and the faming had been hampered due too blockade of the river, he said.
Manwar Hossain Mollah, upazila nirbahi officer of Kaliganj said, they were informed that some unscrupulous people in the upazila had occupied a portion of the River Chitra. They had constructed establishments there, he said.
But nobody was entitled to occupy the river or river beds. Illegally occupied portion of the river should be rescued from the clutch of the grabbers within a short time, UNO said.
