Three top mobile phone operators of the country namely Grameenphone, Banglalink and Robi paid Tk 8744 crore 19 lakh 50 thousand to search engine Google and social media operator Facebook for online advertisement in last five years.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) said this in a report submitted in the High Court bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Ashraful Kamal on Thursday.
BTRC’s lawyer A K M Alamgir submitted the report in the court.
Advocate Mohamamd Humayun Kabir Pallab took part in the hearing on behalf of the writ petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Tushar Kanti Roy stood for the state.
Deputy Director of System and Services department of BTRC Engineer Md Nahidul Hasan said, “Three top mobile phone operators of the country namely Grameenphone, Banglalink and Robi paid
Tk 8744 crore 19 lakh 50 thousand to search engine Google and social media operator Facebook in last five years.”
After hearing the report, the court ordered the NBR (National Board of Revenue) to submit a report on October 20 in the court containing information of collecting revenue from the all internet based institutions and on what steps the NBR had taken to collect revenue from such institutions.
The High Court on April 18, 2018, ordered to probe the tax evasion by all internet based institutions, including Googel and Facebook.
Secretaries of Ministries of Finance, Law and Information, BB Governor, NBR Chairman, and BTRC Chairman were asked to constitute the probe committee.
The writ petition was filed as a public interest litigation by six SC lawyers.
