Staff Reporter :The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the interim bail granted to BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed in four cases filed on charges of violence. A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, on Thursday upheld the interim bail, turning down the government’s petition against a High Court order granting bail to BNP leader. Sagir Hossain Leon, lawyer of Rizvi Ahmed,said that there was no legal barrier for his release after the order. On July 1, Rizvi Ahmed was granted interim bail in the four cases.The same bench in another order also upheld the bail to BNP standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy. He is also facing violence and arson attack cases. On the other hand, the HC granted anticipatory bail to BNP standing committee members Tariqul Islam and MK Anwar, Chairperson’s adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo and Joint Secretary General Amanullah Aman in 56 separate arson and vandalism cases. An HC bench, comprising Justice Syed Mohammad Ziaul Karim and Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain, granted the bail for four weeks after the BNP leaders appeared before the bench with separate bail petitions. Tariqul Islam and MK Anwar got bail in four and nine cases respectively, Mintoo obtained bail in one case and Aman in 42 cases, said their lawyer AKM Ehsanur Rahman.Ehsan said all the cases were filed in and around Dhaka during the blockade and hartals enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance this year.
