Staff Reporter :
The BNP on Wednesday said the government’s tall claim on GDP growth this year at 7.65is nothing but a lip service.
“Limitless corruption of the government has made the national economy empty. They looted public treasury and all banks. Their unlimited plundering has destroyed the financial sector. In these circumstances, the government claim for 7.65 percent GDP in 2017-18 fiscal years sounds empty.
It is totally a lip service,” BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said at a news briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the capital.
Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Tuesday claimed GDP growth during this fiscal year will be higher than initially expected. He made the disclosure on the city yesterday.
The BNP leader also said every road and highway and other infrastructures of the country were ruined. Remittance declined. Foreign and local investment are near to a halt.
There is no development in the ground that justifies big GDP growth. Moreover whatever development is taking place is mainly focused on improving the condition of wealthy party men, poor are only getting poorer, Rizvi said.
The BNP leader expressed concern over the party chief Khaleda Zia’s health saying there is no way to know the party chairperson’s health condition.
“We are yet to be confirmed the actual health condition of this 73 year old popular national leader (Khaleda),” he said.
The government is depriving Khaleda Zia, now in Dhaka’s old central jail, of treatment facilities by creating obstacles in many ways, he added.
“Khaleda Zia’s personal doctors have been denied access to visit her in jail to check her health and provide treatment. We are at the same time denied of information relating to the health of our leader,” Rizvi said.
He said that the government is causing suffering to Khaleda by snatching away her rights, including the rights to treatment and of getting bail.
