People as well public health experts have expressed anxiety over government’s improper initiatives for ensuring adequate vaccines to fight against the probable 2nd wave of corona attack in Bangladesh.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, World Health Organisation (WHO) warned that the Covid-19 pandemic may be long lasting without using vaccine.
Public health experts across the globe said that vaccine is the main weapon to eliminate Coronavirus.
In this circumstance, Bangadesh government has confirmed only three crore doses of vaccine which will be ensured vaccination for 1.50 crore of people.
The number is very poor to vaccination the country’s about 17 crore of people, as per public health experts.
They said that the second wave of the fatal virus has already attacked US and European countries.
They expressed anxiousness that a large number of Bangladeshi people are living in those countries.
Those expatriates visit home frequently which could also pose a grave risk of mass contaminations among Bangladeshi people.
On the other hand, local transmissions have also found increased in recent days.
In this circumstance, the government on November 5 signed a deal with Beximco Pharmaceuticals and India’s Serum Institute to buy
three crore doses of the Oxford University innovated vaccine which developed by AstraZeneca bio pharmaceutical company, UK.
“The long waiting for vaccine will be ended soon. We will buy three crore doses of the vaccine whenever it is ready. We can serve to 1.5 crore of people with this. That means one persons to be needed two doses of the vaccine,” Zahid Maleque had said after signing the deal.
The Minister as well higher officials of the Health Ministry did not said anything about further deals to buy more vaccines.
The National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19 also in dark about the government’s steps to vaccinate rest of the people.
When contacted, Professor Dr. Nazrul Islam, member of the national committee and former Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), said that he had no idea about government’s move.
“Vaccinisation of only 1.50 crore people is not enough. The government must not sit idle and they must aware about the rest 15-16 crore people but I do not know anything about the matter,” Professor Nazrul Islam told The New Nation.
The other experts also expressed frustrations about the government’s actions in this regard.
“Without getting vaccine, we cannot prevent the second wave of covid-19 attack in our country. In this circumstance, there are huge reasons to be worried. Less quantities have been ensured vaccine against our demand,” Professor Dr. Muzaherul Huq, former Advisor of WHO, told The New Nation.
He said government should of use entire machinery including diplomacy to get access of more vaccines from WHO, UN and other organizations and vaccine producing countries as per demand of the country’s populations.
