Govt working for nutrition security: Minister

Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury said the government now aims at ensuring nutrition security for the people through a sustainable food production system.
“The present government is working relentlessly not only to build a poverty and hunger free country but also to establish people’s constitutional right to have nutritious food,” the minister said this as the chief guest on Wednesday while unveiling a book at CIRDAP auditorium here.
Matia said: “Our aim is to make the country a developed one not only economically, but also by ensuring nutritious and safe food for the nation.”
The government wanted to attain food autarky and consequently the country has become self-sufficient in food by implementing effective measures, Matia noted.
Food Minister Quamrul Islam said the people are not suffering from starvation as the country has achieved the middle income status and it will be a developed one by 2041.
Fisheries and Livestock Secretary M Raisul Alam Mondol, USAID Mission Director Derick Brown, Head of Development, Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh Mario Ronconi and FAO representative in Bangladesh Robert D Simpson spoke as the special guests while Food Secretary Shahabuddin Ahmad chaired the function.
